Tuition Refund Policy
  1. This policy governs tuition refunds for students respecting CiiAT – The Canadian International Institute of Art Therapy and any aspect of its operations.
  2. This policy is taken directly from the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB).
    • Institutions may not accept any tuition or related fees until they have provided a copy of the institution’s Tuition Refund Policy to the student.
    • When a refund is due, an institution must provide it to the student within 30 days of:
      • Receiving a notice of withdrawal from a student
      • Receiving a copy of refusal of a study permit
      • Providing a student with a notice of dismissal
      • Receiving an order from the registrar to issue a refund because a student was admitted in an approved program without meeting the admission requirements.
      • The program end date included in the enrolment contract, if an institution did not provide a work experience to a student within 30 days of the end date.
      • The date on which the first 30% of the program would have been completed, if a student did not attend the first 30% of the program.
  3. If a refund is due and the student has paid for, but not received, textbooks or other course materials, including equipment or uniforms, the institution must also refund the fees charged for these items.

Fees and Tuition Refund for Programs that Require Approval

Programs that Require Approval:

  • Art Psychotherapy Diploma Program
Approved Program Refund Due
Before program start date, institution receives a notice of withdrawal
  • No later than seven days after student signed the enrolment contract, and
  • Before the program start date.
100% tuition and all related fees, other than application fees. Related fees include: administrative fees, assessment fees, and fees charged for textbooks or other course materials.
  • At least 30 days before the later of:
    1. The program start date in the most recent letter of acceptance
    2. The program start date in the enrolment contract
Institution may retain up to 10% of tuition, to a maximum of $1,000
  • More than seven days after the student and institution signed the enrolment contract, and
  • Less than 30 days before the later of:
    1. The program start date in the most recent letter of acceptance
    2. The program start date in the enrolment contract
Institution may retain up to 20% of tuition, to a maximum of $1,300
After program start date, institution receives a notice of withdrawal – applies to all approved programs, other than distance-education-only program
  • After the program start date, and up to and including 10% of instruction hours have been provided.
Institution may retain up to 30% of tuition
  • After the program start date, and after more than 10% but before 30% of instruction hours have been provided.
Institution may retain up to 50% of tuition
After program start date, institution delivers a notice of dismissal to a student – applies to all approved programs, other than distance-education-only program:
  • Up to and including 10% of instruction hours have been provided.
Institution may retain up to 30% of tuition
  • More than 10% but less than 30% of the instruction hours have been provided
Institution may retain up to 50% of tuition
Institution receives a refusal of study permit from an international student
  • Before 30% of instruction hours would have been provided, had the student started the program on the later of the following:
    1. The program start date in the most recent letter of acceptance
    2. The program start date in the enrolment contract
  • Student has not requested additional letter(s) of acceptance.
100% tuition and all related fees, other than application fees
After the program start date, student withdraws or is dismissed from a distance-education-only program:
  • Student completed up to 30% of the program.
Institution may retain up to 30% of the tuition
  • Student completed more than 30% but less than 50% of the program (based on evaluation provided to student).
Institution may retain up to 50% of the tuition
Student does not attend – no-show:
  • A student (other than a distance-education-only student) does not attend the first 30% of the program.
Institution may retain up to 50% of the tuition
Approved Programs – Compliance Issues Refund Due
Student enrolled in a program without having met the admission requirements for the program
  • If the student did not misrepresent the student’s knowledge or skills when applying for admission and the registrar orders the institution to refund tuition and fees.
100% tuition and all related fees, including application fees
Institution does not provide a work experience
  • The institution fails to provide the work experience within 30 days of the contract end date, unless the registrar determines the institution was prevented from doing so by circumstances beyond its control.
100% tuition and all related fees, other than application fees

Fees and Tuition Refund for Programs that do not Require Approval

Programs that do not Require Approval:

  • Therapeutic Arts Practitioner Certification
  • Art of Psychology
  • Attached for Life
  • Creating with Nature
  • Navigating Neurodiversity
  • Passion, Purpose, Profit
  • Rethinking Relationships
  • Trauma-Informed Practice
Programs that do not require approval – programs that have tuition of $4,000 or more: Refund Due
  • The student does not attend the program, and
  • The institution receives from the student a notice of withdrawal or a copy of refusal of a study permit no later than 30 days after:

a) the start date of the program in the most recent letter of acceptance

b) the start date of the program in the enrolment contract.

100% tuition and all related fees, other than application fees
Programs that do not require approval – programs that have tuition of less than $4,000: Refund Due

– Therapeutic Arts Practitioner Certification:

  • The student does not attend the program, and
  • The institution receives from the student a notice of withdrawal or a copy of refusal of a study permit no later than 30 days prior to the start date of the program.
100% tuition and all related fees, other than nonrefundable deposit of $695

  • Trauma-Informed Practice:
    • The student completes payment of the program.
Institution retains 100% of tuition and all related fees

The institution must pay the student within 30 days of receiving a notice of withdrawal or a copy of refusal of a study permit, as applicable.
